Why a BioSciences Forum?
North Carolina’s bioscience industries have grown 10 percent per year for the past decade and now include over 450 companies employing nearly 55,000 people across the state. We are the third leading biotechnology state in the nation, based on number of companies. Hundreds of millions of federal dollars pour into North Carolina universities each year in support of a very broad range of scientific research projects and more than 150 patents are granted each year to North Carolina universities, companies and individuals.
A critical component of the success of the life science industries is linked to people who can transfer the innovation and knowledge behind the patents into new products and processes while providing managerial support and leadership. Recognizing this need, NC State’s College of Management established a concentration in its MBA program (in the Jenkins Graduate School of Management), to prepare individuals with the expertise required to manage life science businesses. This BioSciences MBA concentration is guided by an Industry Advisory Board whose membership includes seasoned leaders from 15 life science companies.
The annual BioSciences Forum, co-hosted with the nation’s first state-sponsored biotechnology development organization, the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, provides an annual celebration of the growth and evolution of this growing MBA concentration and a wonderful way to share our efforts with the community.
Who would benefit from attending
The annual BioPharma Forum provides an opportunity for discussion and networking among colleagues in the industry and students, faculty and administrators who have a special interest or focus on the life sciences industry. As an extension of the NC State College of Management's BioPharma Management Initiative, the forum's primary audience is the MBA students in the NC State Jenkins Graduate School of Management, particularly those concentrating in biopharma/life sciences management. The NC State College of Management's faculty and administrators also attend, along with representatives of many of North Carolina’s bioscience companies. Over the past two years, the BioPharma Forum has drawn nearly 200 registrants.
