Message from the Dean
Being at the right place at the right time ... sometimes it seems that's all it takes to land that first job after college. At least, that's how it may seem for those who are still handing out resumes.
In reality, the key to launching your career lies in getting experience in your field, and not being afraid to take opportunities as they become available. The College of Management provides technology-enriched academic programs that, combined with the resources available through NC State, give our students many opportunities for practical, experiential learning and leadership development. Project courses, internships, co-op education, international experiences, student organizations, networking at special lectures and events held by the college - all are offered to help our students add interpersonal, communication and leadership skills to the knowledge you are gaining in the classroom. Take advantage of these opportunities throughout your academic career, as employers value individuals who not only have the book-learning but also hands-on experience and the 'soft skills' that enable them to work effectively in a dynamic team-based environment.
We also encourage you to use the career development resources available to you through the college's career services staff and the University Career Center. Work on your resume. Attend career fairs and corporate information sessions. Complete an internship. Attend lectures to hear first-hand from business leaders about the challenges and opportunities ahead of you. Get to know your college Career Resources staff members. They are prepared to help you sort through your career goals as you create a plan for launching your career.
Securing the job you want can be as complex, interesting - and possibly frustrating - as any assigned course project. Achieving success requires diligence, persistence and enthusiasm. I wish you well in all your management endeavors and look forward to participating in college events with you.
- Ira Weiss, dean
