Priorities & Policies

Requests for service will be handled according to an assigned priority and available staff resources.Computing service priorities are based on the scope and severity of the problem. The type of service could be hardware or software. In the list below, a 'failure' in a system means it is unusable. A 'problem' in a system means it is still usable in some way.

Priority Levels for Service

Level One
  • Failures and problems affecting the greatest number of users, e.g., the multimedia classrooms, the student computing lab network, the faculty/staff network.
Level Two
  • A failure in an individual faculty or staff computer.
  • The installation of a computer for a new faculty or staff member.
Level Three
  • A problem in an individual faculty or staff computer. This would include problems with certain software programs.
  • The installation of a new computer or upgrading an existing one for a faculty or staff member.
Level Four
  • A failure in an individual student computing lab computer.
  • The installation of a new computer or upgrading an existing computer in the lab.
Level Five
  • A problem with an individual student computing lab computer.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestion, etc., about computing service priorities, please contact the Computing Services staff.

Network and E-mail Policies

Upon hiring, full time COM faculty/staff will get a NCSU Unity account, a COM network account, and COM-CS will set up an e-mail alias. Faculty will get a COM Pegasus Mail account and staff will get a GroupWise account. Upon hiring, part time COM faculty/staff will get a NCSU Unity account. Part time COM faculty/staff can get a COM network account, e-mail alias, and COM Pegasus Mail account upon request. In general, NCSU students employed by the COM do not get a COM network account, e-mail alias, or COM Pegasus Mail account. All registered students have NCSU Unity accounts. After a COM faculty/staff member has left NCSU, their NCSU Unity, COM network, and COM e-mail accounts are deactivated. Upon request, COM Pegasus e-mail may be forwarded up to 90 days. After that time, COM network accounts and e-mail accounts are closed and deleted. NCSU Unity account and files are deleted one year after deactivation. Retired faculty/staff may request retention of their NCSU Unity, COM network, and e-mail accounts. A notice from the department head to NCSU & COM Computing Services is necessary to verify status. The accounts must be renewed annually.

Faculty and Staff Moves

Departments are responsible for informing Computing Service of any changes in personnel whether new, separated, or transferred. Notify Carlos Sanford via
e-mail,carlos_sanford@ncsu.edu , or phone, 3-1111, at least 5 business days in advance.

This time is necessary for the Computing Service to coordinate any preliminary work with the NCSU Computing Center or Telecommunications Office for network connections. Network user accounts may be activated, modified, or deleted as appropriate. Accounts used by individuals other than the authorized user compromises security and raises liability issues.

Additional time may be needed to: determine the handling of e-mail redirection/termination. Backup and/or storage of necessary files and information. Determine if access to other services requires termination.

Personal computers

Owners are responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and upgrading personally-owned computing hardware and software. For users requesting a connection to the campus computer network, Computing Service will recommend the necessary software and hardware to enable access.

Rules for Network Use of Personal Laptops by Faculty and Staff in the College of Management

At times, College of Management faculty or staff may want to connect their personal laptop (a laptop owned by the individual) to the NCSU network in the COM.

All users are required to observe the NCSU policy, 'Computer and Network Use Regulations and Rules', http://www.ncsu.edu/it/rulesregs. Note the requirement to use approved anti-virus software on computers connected to the NC State network. This reduces the possibility of an individual's computer and other computers on the network from getting infected, exploited, hacked, etc.

Personal laptops are connected to the NCSU network via the NCSU Nomad System. See https://nomad.ncsu.edu for information regarding its use. COM computers (owned by the college) are connected to the NCSU network via the COM local area network.

The two types of NCSU network connections are wired and wireless. Both require a Unity ID. For laptops, a wireless network card is also needed. For wired access, contact COM Computing Services in advance to arrange for service.

Wireless Access

Nelson Hall has wireless coverage thorougout the buildinng.

Wired Access

Faculty or staff who cannot access wireless due to location or signal-strength restrictions may decide to use their personal laptops instead of their COM computers as their primary computer. In these cases, wired access will be through the NCSU Nomad System mentioned above.

In the case of multiple occupants per office, either the entire office is connected to the NCSU network via the Nelson Hall local area network or the entire office is connected to the NCSU network via the NCSU Nomad System. The network switches are not dynamically configurable to use either connection.

Purchasing

Upon departmental request, Computing Service will provide consultation for the purchasing of computing equipment. It will provide recommended vendor names, part numbers, and specifications for equipment purchases.

System Backups

Computing Service will backup the Faculty/Staff and Computing Lab file servers once a week. E-mail is backed up every business day.
