Diversity Mission

The College of Management at North Carolina State University embraces diversity as being central to our academic mission. The college’s Diversity Initiative supports this by creating an environment that is enriched by the celebration and sustained growth of diversity, thereby enabling our students, faculty and staff to be active, informed, productive participants in a diverse global society.

Goals of the Diversity Initiative

The College of Management’s Diversity Initiative supports this mission through educational program support and by fostering leadership and career development of students, faculty and staff. The College of Management aspires:

  • To increase diversity within the college
  • To enhance opportunities for diverse students to receive a college education, regardless of their financial background
  • To ensure cultural awareness and sensitivity are prevalent in the college environment
  • To be recognized as a leader in the area of diversity and inclusion

Program Overview

Our Diversity Initiative seeks to enhance and enrich the experience of all members of the college community by offering programs and resources that increase understanding and awareness among diverse populations. This includes tapping the resources of the university’s diversity initiatives as well as developing college-specific programs.

In a study by the Association for American Colleges and Universities, researchers stated that colleges with strong diversity populations positively benefit both minority and majority students by fostering stronger intercultural relationships and stimulating academic growth.

Diversity Initiative ModelThe College of Management is committed to achieving its diversity goals by engaging our internal and external constituents - our students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the business community and other friends of the college - through our comprehensive approach to diversity which includes the following components:

Key Components

The Diversity Advisory Board contributes to the enrichment of our students’ college experience as well as the college community as a whole by helping to foster leadership and career development, and by providing guidance for programs and activities developed in support of the college’s diversity goals. In doing so, the board helps ensure that our diversity efforts reflect the real-world environment that our students will be joining.

Student scholarships and fellowships help assure that students from diverse backgrounds who require financial assistance to achieve their dreams of a college education have access to the financial assistance they need. In addition, scholarships enable students to participate in study abroad experiences, conferences, and professional development opportunities that they otherwise would not be able to afford.

Student recruitment involves actively engaging prospective students from various segments of the community, including middle schools, high schools and community colleges. Diversity in the student pipeline inevitably helps increase the presence of qualified diverse talent in corporate America.

Student development helps students improve their skill sets, intellect and cross-cultural interactions. Active involvement in student development is paramount to the growth and success of all students. Professional and academic interventions can provide unlimited opportunities for students to excel in their chosen vocation.

Faculty development is critical, as faculty provide the intellectual force and leadership in the realm of higher education, helping to shape the world view of our students. It is paramount to engage faculty in our diversity efforts and to provide them with resources for building stronger bridges with students from diverse populations.

Community support is vital for the success of this initiative. The global community in which we live requires the efforts of many individuals to ensure that diversity is an opportunity and not an issue. The College of Management's Diversity Initiative welcomes community support and involvement.
