Local, Part-time Research Opportunity: A local financial analysis software company is looking for a graduate student with experience / expertise in economic regression or statistical correlation to work part-time on a research project involving one of their company’s products.   The basic premise of the project is tying loan loss data for banks to local, regional, or national macro-economic conditions through statistics and regression techniques.

Graduate Student Research Symposium: The Graduate Program in Economics is currently looking for students interested in participating in the Fifth Annual NC State University Graduate Student Research Symposium, to be held in the McKimmon Center on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm. The goals of the symposium are to showcase the outstanding quality and diversity of graduate-level research at NC State, in addition to providing students with the opportunity to practice their communication skills with those outside of their discipline. Last year, there were 159 poster presentations, representing 60 graduate programs from  every college. Information about the symposium is available at http://www.ncsu.edu/grad/research/symposium.html. The Eastern Economics Association (EEA) meeting will be held in Philadelphia, PA from February 26 through February 28, 2010. The deadline to submit a paper is November 15, 2009. Papers submitted on or before October 15, 2009 can be submitted for a discounted rate. Please see the meeting announcement for more information.


The Center for Governance and Economic Growth at RTI is accepting applications for internship positions in international development. While the deadline for the fall semester positions has passed, they are accepting applications on a rolling basis for later start dates.

Beginning this semester, ALL graduate students are required to submit a semesterly progress report with information about completed courses, progress on research, completion of required milestones, work experience, etc. This progress report can be entered using GSOARS, the University's Graduate Student Online Academic Reporting System. For those of you going on the job market, GSOARS will generate a CV based on the information you enter. Please have your updates completed no later than September 30, 2009.

Funding Opportunities

 

NSF East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes
Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 NSF East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students. The Summer Institutes are hosted by foreign counterparts committed to increasing opportunities for young U.S. researchers to work in research facilities and with host mentors abroad. Fellows are supported to participate in eight-week research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan (10 weeks), Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan from June to August. The program provides a $5,000 summer stipend, round-trip airfare to the host location, living expenses abroad, and an introduction to the society, culture, language, and research environment of the host location.   The 2010 application is now open and will close December 8, 2009. Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships
Applications for the Ford Foundation's Diversity Fellowships are currently being accepted for current PHD students as well as recent PHD graduates looking for a post-doctoral opportunity.  "Through its program of Diversity Fellowships, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students."

The predoctoral fellowship applications are due on November 2, 2009. Dissertation and post-doctoral applications are due November 9, 2009.
