Admissions
Admission decisions are based on undergraduate record, three letters of recommendation, and, if submitted, GRE scores. GRE scores are recommended for all applicants and are required for any applicant wishing to be considered for financial aid. (Please note that we are unable to offer financial aid to master's students. Only applicants to the doctoral program are eligible for aid consideration.) The GRE subject test in economics is not required. Students who are admitted must have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (B) or better. Students awarded financial aid typically have combined GRE scores for the verbal and quantitative portions of 1200 or more.
Those seeking acceptance for fall 2007 may be interested in the USDA National Needs Fellowship. Those seeking consideration for this fellowship must apply by the first week of February.
Students whose native language is not English, regardless of citizenship, must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores as evidence of competency in English sufficient for full-time graduate study. The Graduate School must receive satisfactory TOEFL scores before granting admission. The Graduate School requires a score of 550 on the written TOEFL or 213 on the computer based TOEFL. There are two exceptions to the TOEFL requirement: applicants having recently completed at least one year of full-time study in a degree program with acceptable grades at a four-year U.S. college or university; and applicants from, or with a degree from, Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
An undergraduate degree in economics is not required; however, applicants are required to have completed courses in intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, and calculus. Students applying to the Ph.D. program must have completed at least two semesters of calculus. Students applying to the master's program must have completed a minimum of one semester of calculus. Introductory courses in statistics and econometrics are strongly encouraged. Exceptional students without this background may be granted a status of provisional admission requiring the completion of courses in which they are deficient with a grade of B or better. Students may be admitted in the fall, spring, or summer semesters but for most students fall admission is recommended. Students with deficiencies in their preparation are advised to apply for Spring or Summer admission.
