Course Title Changes in TRACS!!

Beginning with registration for Fall 2008 courses, all College of Management entrepreneurship courses will be listed with the prefix MIE. We will no longer be using the BUS prefix for entrepreneurship courses. For example, if you are looking for the course that used to be called BUS 310, you will now need to look for the course called MIE 310. There are no changes to the course content, these changes apply only to the naming of the courses.

Remember to check with your academic or faculty advisor each semester to review possible changes in degree requirements and in course availability. Graduate students may wish to explore MBA concentrations in product innovation management and technology entrepreneurship commercialization.

Course Descriptions

MIE 310 - Intro to Entrepreneurship

This course is designed to give students an introduction to business applications and how they apply to an entrepreneurial venture. The course will be broken down into segments with each segment covering a specific topic and its relation to entrepreneurship. By the end of the course, students should be comfortable with business concepts, topics, and terminology and have developed a working knowledge of business applications and their relation to entrepreneurship.

Course Goals: Students successfully completing this course will:

  • Have a working knowledge of individual aspects of business applications.
  • Have gained an understanding of how these aspects of business relate to entrepreneurship.
  • Have begun to build a knowledge base and be comfortable with business concepts, topics, and terminology.
  • Have expanded their network of contacts.
  • Course is open to all NCSU students who have attained sophomore standing.

There are no prereqs for this course. Open to any student who has attained at least sophomore standing.

MIE 311- Entrepreneurship Skills

This course is taught in three phases. The first phase focuses on self-discovery through the use of tools such as personality profiles, communication style profiles, emotional intelligence profiles, and entrepreneurship indicator tools. The second phase examines what makes an entrepreneur through the use of articles and case studies in class, as well as individual student research on what are some typical traits, styles, and attributes of successful entrepreneurs. Guest speakers will be a critical part of phase two. The third phase will look at some skills that are necessary for entrepreneurial success. Networking, negotiation, leadership, resource management, presentation and many other skills will be taught to students through the use of classroom components, guest speakers and experiential components where students can practice their skills.

Course Goals: Students successfully completing this course will:

  • Have begun their journey towards self discovery.
  • Have a better understanding of who they are and how that relates to entrepreneurship.
  • Have gained a realistic understanding of what to expect as an entrepreneur.
  • Have a working knowledge as well as hands on experience with skills that are necessary for success in any entrepreneurial venture.
  • Have expanded their network of contacts.
  • Course is open to all NCSU students who have attained sophomore standing.

MIE 412-Finance and Accounting for Entrepreneurs

This course will give students the opportunity to gain hands on experience as well as a working knowledge of how to create the financial portion of a business plan. Topics will include understanding the funding environment, generating and defending financial projections, revenue streams and expense categories, cost and price estimates, and the creation of pro-forma financial statements.

Course Goals: Students successfully completing this course will:

  • Have gained experience with developing financial projections.
  • Have gained an understanding of the funding environment.
  • Have gained an understanding of the importance of cash in an entrepreneurial venture.
  • Have gained an understanding of all relevant revenue streams and expense categories.
  • Have a working knowledge and experience with developing pro-forma financial statements based on research.
  • Have gained an understanding of the importance of having a qualified accountant. involved with the business as well as an understanding of how to work with accountants.

Prereqs : MIE 310 Introduction to Entrepreneurship and MIE 311 Entrepreneurship Skills

Recommended Coreq : MIE 413 New Venture Planning

*Note - It is strongly recommended that students take this course during the same semester as MIE 413 New Venture Planning.  If these courses are not taken during the same semester, then MIE 412 Finance and Accounting for Entrepreneurs must be successfully completed before taking MIE 413 New Venture Planning.

MIE 413-New Venture Planning

Course will look at how a concept is taken from a business plan to a start up in the first phases of the entrepreneurial process. Topics include idea conception, entrepreneurship, business planning, market research, entrepreneurial opportunities and strategies. Final deliverable will be a complete business plan for a high growth venture and presentation to mock investors. Guest speakers will be presented throughout the course.

Course Goals: Students successfully completing this course will:

  • Have a thorough understanding of the entrepreneurial process from idea generation to the structuring of an entrepreneurial venture.
  • Have gained hands on experience with all phases of the entrepreneurial process from idea generation to structuring a venture including developing, writing, re-writing, presenting and defending a complete business plan.
  • Have expanded their network of contacts.

Prereqs : MIE 310 Introduction to Entrepreneurship and MIE 311 Entrepreneurship Skills

Prereq or Coreq : MIE 412 Finance and Accounting for Entrepreneurs

MIE 419-Entrepreneurship Practicum

Students will have the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in entrepreneurship to individual projects. Individual projects will be dependant on specific needs. Students will be required to attend weekly meetings with instructors and other students to review what they are learning, problems they are facing, and any other topics that arise. Performance measures will be established and assessed throughout the project to ensure that all parties benefit from the relationship. The final deliverable for the course will include an individual evaluation of the project as well as a presentation to instructors that includes a summary of the work completed over the course of the semester and the implications of that work.

Course Goals:

  • To be determined based on individual projects.

Prereqs : MIE 310 Introduction to Entrepreneurship, MIE 311 Entrepreneurship Skills, MIE 412 Finance and Accounting for Entrepreneurs, and MIE 413 New Venture Planning

MIE 495Y-Social Entrepreneurship Practicum

Performance measures will be established and assessed throughout the

The final deliverable for the course will include an individual evaluation of the project as well as a presentation to instructors that includes a summary of the work completed over the course of the semester and the implications of that work.
