March 23, 2007 - Twenty-five professionals who are champions of enterprise risk management within their organizations met for the first time today as the new advisory board for the NC State College of Management's Enterprise Risk Management Initiative.
The board was formed to help guide leaders of the ERM Initiative at the college as they further build the initiative, including the development of graduate courses and outreach to the business community through executive programs, its growing ERM information portal, and other activities.
The advisory board is comprised of a balanced mix of professionals who are ERM advisors or leaders at local or national corporate organizations from several industry sectors. Arrington Mixon, senior vice president enterprise credit risk and risk management executive at Bank of America, is chair of the board.
"The local and national representation of ERM experts on our advisory board will be a tremendous resource for the ERM Initiative team as we continue to expand our thought leadership activities at national and international levels,” says Mark Beasley, ERM Initiative Director.
“The talent and strong ERM leadership of our advisory board will ensure that our Initiative continues to address cutting edge issues as enterprises seek to manage the complex portfolio of risks they face each day,” he said.
At the inaugural meeting, Bruce Branson, associate director of the ERM Initiative, led a discussion on the new courses that have already been developed: an Overview of ERM, to be offered in fall 2007; Risk Assessment and Measurement Tools, available in spring 2008, and Corporate Risk Management, also available in spring 2008.
Beasley also announced the upcoming ERM Fundamentals: A Workshop, scheduled for Wednesday, May 9, at NC State's McKimmon Center.
The advisory board members also discussed how they will be helping the Initiative’s leadership team in the following areas:
- Provide advice on ERM curriculum for the College of Management’s graduate programs
- Help the Initiative identify emerging ERM trends and best practices
- Provide insights on the emerging practice of ERM
- Identify education-related needs and opportunities for executives currently leading ERM initiatives in organizations and for the graduate students who will be the next generation of executives
- Assist in planning the Initiative’s ERM roundtables and executive education programs

About the ERM Initiative at NC State
Launched in 2003, the ERM Initiative at NC State’s College of Management provides thought leadership on enterprise risk management, with an emphasis on the implementation of ERM in strategy and corporate governance. Its four primary areas of focus are:
Outreach to the business community through ERM Roundtables and executive education,
ERM best practice resources through the Initiative’s internet portal,
Research on emerging ERM implementation benefits and implementation challenges, and
Education through the College’s MBA and other graduate programs.
ERM Roundtables
The Initiative hosts six ERM Roundtables during each academic year for business professionals - members of boards of directors, chief financial officers, and chief risk officers - who lead enterprise-wide risk management efforts in the organizations they serve. ERM Roundtables are open to the public free of charge, but registration is required.
The final ERM Roundtable for this academic year will be held Friday, April 27, at the Exploris Museum in Raleigh, N.C., 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
The presenters are Marc Jarsulic, Office of Risk Assessmenet, Securities and Exchange Commission, Washington, DC, and Chris Hess, Office of Program Evaluation and Risk Analysis, Internal Revenue Service, Washington, DC. They will discuss “SEC and IRS Perspectives on ERM.”
