Microsoft Office 2007 Notes
Microsoft Office 2007 was released to the general public early this year. Microsoft mainstream (free) support for Office XP ended July 2006. To keep current with the marketplace, we began to deploy Office 2007 to selected staff and interested faculty in the College of Management at the end of the spring semester. The deployment continued throughout the summer and will continue into the fall. Barring unforeseen difficulties, we anticipate college-wide deployment in spring ’08 including the college’s labs and classrooms.
Office 2007 has a different look and feel compared to Office XP. It also does not coexist with Office XP; that is, problems may occur if you switch back and forth between them.
Office 2007 saves new files, by default, with a new format that is incompatible with earlier Office versions. You can choose ‘File, Save As’ and select an earlier version, for example, Office XP, if necessary. This would allow you to share your file with users of earlier Office versions.
As an alternative to installing Office 2007 on your PC, you may want to test drive it first using NC State’s Virtual Computing Lab (VCL). This runs Office 2007 on a remote desktop and will not disturb your PC’s setup. You can save your files on your local PC.
If you would like to use the VCL, please contact Donna Barrett, 919.515.6176. She will need your Unity ID (no passwords please).
If you would like a training class in the Ericsson Classroom on Office 2007, please contact Carlos Sanford, 919.513.1111.
For those willing to take the plunge and install Office 2007 on your desktop PC, it is deployed using the Novell Application Launcher (NAL). Since earlier versions of Office like 2000, XP, and 2003 will not work properly with Office 2007, the deployment using the NAL will uninstall any earlier version.
If you would like to install Office 2007 on your PC, please contact Carlos Sanford, 919.513.1111.
If you have questions, please contact Dan Steen or another member of the college's Computing Services staff.
