Faculty survey for possible SPSS site license

Faculty in the College of Management and CHASS have asked about a college-wide or a university-wide license for SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). To help with planning, Dan Steen has requested faculty responses to a brief survey (on SurveyMonkey).

The survey will remain open through Thursday, Aug. 30. If you have any comments, questions, or want additional information, please contact Dan Steen, 919.515.6094; 2410 Nelson Hall.

Research Brown Bag: Helpful grantwriting processes

Elaine Rideout, an accomplished grant writer who has written $110 million in successful grants - $40 million in the past year - will discuss the processes she has used to secure research funding. This is the first of a series of research brown bag lunch discussions arranged by Lynda Aiman-Smith, Brian Thomas and Greg Young. Read more

Deployment of Microsoft Office 2007 under way - but with a caveat

Microsoft Office 2007 deployment began earlier this year to selected faculty and staff, and will continue into the fall to others. The computing services staff, though, note that Office 2007 has a different look and feel compared to Office XP. It also does not coexist with Office XP; that is, problems may occur if you switch back and forth between them. Read more

Website Home Page Update

The college's website has been in transition this summer, bringing in new feature story/photo displays and other improvements to better showcase our news, events and achievements. Additional upgrades will be made early this fall. If you would like to help by being part of the feedback team, please contact Charles, our webmaster.

Story ideas welcome

Websites are no longer containers for static information. They must constantly be updated, with news, features, photos and calendar items. Please submit your news and suggestions for feature stories to Anna Rzewnicki. She has a student communications intern this year

First Friday College Communications Roundtable

Administrative and professional staff in the college's centers and initiatives, academic programs and departments have been meeting at monthly First Friday sessions, to discuss marketing and communications tools, best practices, and related topics. Best practices for using Bronto as our electronic newsletter distribution system were discussed at the August meeting.

The agenda for the Sept. 7 meeting will include first steps toward using Bronto for a collegewide contact management system and proposed upgrades to the college's home page.

The next session will be Friday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Board Room. Any individuals who would like to attend but haven't been receiving email reminders may contact Christine Miller and ask to be added to the mailing list.

Steam shutoff

Christine Miller reminds us that hot water, heat and steam will be disconnected in Nelson Hall from 8 a.m. Aug. 27 through 8 p.m. on Sept. 10. The disconnect will allow the contractor to renovate steam piping for more capacity of steam to the air handlers for
the winter season. Ceilings in Nelson Hall may leak again, as they have under the same circumstances in the past. Report any problems to Christine. However, note that during this period, no cold offices or classrooms will be reported to maintenance.
