Department Head | Dr. Frank Buckless, KPMG Professor

Today’s global business environment is bringing new opportunities and challenges to the accounting profession. New business reporting models, international financial reporting standards, corporate governance, financial disclosure, fraud prevention, and government regulations are all shaping the future of the profession. Faculty in the Department of Accounting at North Carolina State University Poole College of Management combine rigorous technical accounting training with a general overview of business topics and a foundation in professional skills to prepare our accounting students for careers in this dynamic environment.

The Department of Accounting prepares students for accounting careers through the following degree programs.

  • Bachelor of Science in Accounting, with concentrations in Financial Analysis, Information Systems, Managerial Accounting and Internal Audit. The Bachelor of Science in Accounting is designed to prepare students for Master of Accounting Programs and entry level accounting positions in business and industry. Students interested in becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) should plan on pursuing a Master of Accounting degree.
  • Master of Accounting, with concentrations in enterprise risk management, information technology, and tax strategy. Students also may take a course in sustainability. The Master of Accounting program is designed to prepare students for entry level positions in professional accounting firms and becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Real World Learning and Research

The department and our Master of Accounting and undergraduate accounting programs have long-standing relationships with the Big Four and Mid-Market national professional service firms, as well as local and regional firms and corporate accounting professionals across numerous industry sectors. Through our ‘meet the firm’ networking programs, classroom presentations and internships, our students come to understanding the diverse aspects of the accounting field and begin to develop their own professional network.

Our faculty – many of whom came to the college from successful careers in public accounting and industry – stay current with accounting theory, laws, and regulations through consulting, continuing professional education, as well as their affiliations with professional associations. Their research in current topics – from enterprise risk management to financial reporting for evolving industry sectors – is helping to build the body of knowledge and assures that our students are prepared for today’s business environment.
