NC State University students, employees, and area community residents with an annual household income below $42,000 can receive free assistance in completing their income tax returns this year.

The service will be available on the following Saturdays – Feb. 7 and 14, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., and Mar. 21, 9 a.m. until 12 noon – in the computing lab, 411 Nelson Hall. Participants are asked to enter the building at the lower level doors on the southwest corner (campus side) of Nelson Hall.

About 15 students in the NC State College of Management’s undergraduate accounting program have been certified by the Internal Revenue Service to provide this service through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

“They will be working with the 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ forms,” said Ernest Carraway, accounting lecturer and faculty coordinator for this service project. The VITA volunteers also can assist with the North Carolina state income tax forms. However, the students will not be working with non-resident forms.

Those wanting to use this service should bring all of their 2008 income information, including:

  • W2’s and 1099’s
  • Social Security cards for the primary tax filer and any dependents being claimed on the tax return
  • A picture ID for the primary tax filer
  • 2007 tax return, if possible
