May 2009- MAC Alumni Newsletter

Dear Alumni,

Well, admissions season is over and we have already started the first summer session of school.  Incoming students are here taking prerequisites and their first MAC classes, while members of the MAC Class of 2009 will be back on campus next week and in July taking the Regulation and Financial sections of the CPA Exam Review course.

We currently have 13 students from the class of 2009 who are still seeking employment.  Some of these individuals have been job seekers since the fall and others have had individual circumstances occur that have changed their employment status.  If you know of any opportunities within your organization or within your network of friends and/ or clients, please contact Katherine or Kelly.  Resumes can be provided upon request.

Our MAC Class of 2010 is currently 101 full-time students and 1 part-time student (plus three part-time students carrying over from last year) – and we have the potential for three additional students!  The average GPA for the new class is 3.51 and their average GMAT is 580.  There are 54 students from NC State and the remaining 48 students come from 35 other universities.  We have 17 fellows in the current class: eight Academic Fellows and nine fellows who were placed with Cherry Bekaert & Holland, Dixon Hughes, Ernst &Young, Grant Thornton, and RSM McGladrey.  Of the 17 fellows, nine are out-of-state students and eight are in-state students.  I am looking forward to interacting with so many talented students!

We are also planning to “check out” two potential students from Zhejhang University in China this fall.  NC State has set up a 3+X program with ZJU, where seniors from ZJU come to NC State to complete their undergraduate requirements and potentially join a Masters Program here.  Two ZJU accounting students will be joining us in the fall to take accounting prerequisites.  If all goes well with these classes and with the rest of their MAC applications, these two students could be accepted into the MAC program starting January 2010.  Upon completion of the program in December 2010, the students will return to China and work in public accounting firms there.

Fifteen MAC students went to study in Prague from May 18th – June 7th.  Two of the students were from the MAC Class of 2009, while the remaining 14 students are incoming members of the Class of 2010.  The students are studying advanced income tax topics with Dr. Roby Sawyers for three weeks, and will visit with accounting firms in Prague and Vienna.  It sounds like they will have a great time.  This is only our first study abroad opportunity for the Class of 2010 – we are looking into developing a spring break option also.

The state budget crisis caused us to cancel the annual MBA/MAC Graduation and Networking Reception in May and the MAC Alumni and New Student Social in June.  However, we hope that alumni events during the next school year can stay on track – I think it’s important to provide you with time to reconnect with other alumni and meet many of our new MAC students in the Class of 2010.  The next event we are considering is a MAC reunion this coming fall.  If you have any suggestions or ideas, please email Andrea (andrea_young@ncsu.edu).

We are starting to plan for some of our fall MAC activities, such as Tour of Cities and Meet the Firms.  The first stop on the 2009 MAC Tour of Cities is Greensboro, NC on Thursday, August 13th.  In addition to the meet the firms activities that day, we will be hosting an alumni social from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm that evening.  If you are located in the Greensboro area, we would love to see you!  We will be at Natty Green’s Pub & Brewing Company  at 345 South Elm Street in Greensboro.  Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks will be served, and a cash bar will be available.  Dress is business or business casual attire.  Please RSVP to Andrea at andrea_young@ncsu.edu or 919-515-1007 if you are interested in attending.
