Research:

My research primarily examines issues related to corporate governance and enterprise risk management. I am currently involved in several research projects that are exploring factors that affect the stage of engagement in enterprise risk management, including board of director involvement and integration with strategic planning. In a separate study sponsored by COSO, I am examining all SEC enforcement actions in the ten year period 1998 – 2007 involving fraudulent financial reporting. In this study we are examining fraud methods and techniques, management involvement, and board of director oversight to see what can be learned about how fraud companies differ from non-fraud companies.

Separately, I just completed a research project where we interviewed 42 individuals who currently serve on one or more public company audit committees. The objective of this research is to gain insights as to processes and procedures audit committees employ to meet their governance responsibilities. Highlights of your experience teaching in the

Highlights of your experience teaching in the MAC Program:

There are several highlights associated with my teaching in the MAC Program. One of the exciting aspects is watching former MAC students as they progress professionally. I have been a part of the MAC Program since its inception in 1994 and have been able to observe numerous “successes” in our graduates’ professional lives. Another highlight is helping students gain an appreciation for the dynamic nature of our profession, including the ever-changing political and regulatory environment. It’s fun to see the profession “come to life” for our students where they see it from a bigger picture than textbooks can describe. Third, it is also exciting to get to know our students on an individual level whereby we get insight as to many of their unique and diverse talents, backgrounds, and aspirations. It’s also fun to help when students are seeking advice.

What are MAC students like in the classroom?

I find the MAC students to be engaged in the learning process, eager to learn and wanting to be challenged. Students like to be pushed beyond their limits and they are generally quite creative in some of the solutions they identify to challenges presented. I also find that the students are high energy and enjoy having fun along the way – laughter can be a learning tool.

Do you have any advice to prospective students on what to expect from the MAC curriculum?

My advice is “focus.” MAC students are making a huge investment by enrolling in our MAC program and they need to take every advantage of opportunities that the MAC program offers. Students should focus their priorities to reap all the possible benefits from their classes and all the other activities provided them during the MAC year. While it is a year, the time goes by quickly. The opportunities provided are tremendous and they can be golden for years to come. A MAC student can never engage in too much networking with business professionals, faculty and fellow students Something personal you would like to share?
