Once again this spring, in place of our semi-annual one day IBM-academia event, we will be hosting IBM University Days on May 15-16, 2008, with the dedicated theme of the Virtual Computing Initiative (VCI).
The Virtual Computing Initiative (VCI) was announced by IBM and NC State in 2006, with the goal of creating a multi-institutional, shared computing services community, that includes universities, community colleges, K-12 schools and business partners. The objective of this community has been to develop and promote virtualization concepts and open source solutions to the benefit of the academia and its stake holders - through the creation of shared virtual computing systems and the support of associated research. Since last spring when we hosted the 1st International Conference on the VCI, the original NC State Virtual Computing Lab (VCL; see http://vcl.ncsu.edu) has grown to a multi-thousand server cluster supporting higher ed and K-12 education across much of North Carolina. And VCL-related activities have spread to many adjacent states - as well as to several other countries, including Canada and India. Numerous funded projects are ongoing WW, that include both infrastructure research and applications development.
One objective of this conference is to provide a discussion forum (through paper and poster presentations) on the implementation and research issues associated with the virtualization technology, management and security policies, user applications, etc. that underlie or utilize solutions like the Virtual Computing Lab. An ongoing set of recent activities has been the integration of "cloud computing" technolgies into the VCL platform, and so various papers will discuss these developments. Another objective is to provide hands-on workshops on the VCL technologies, as well as birds-of-a-feather meetings of various associated code development and other project communities or teams.
And as with previous IBM University Days, it will offer an opportunity for the IBM and academic communities to network - bringing together developers and university faculty (seeking to define collaborative educational and research projects), as well as prospective employers and employees, i.e., university students. There will be representatives from IBM recruiting and other university relations teams. In 2008, the RTP Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) will once again be funding projects associated with the Virtual Computing Initiative, and so there will also be various announcements and discussions on awards and funding opportunities.
