Venture Capital Forum
CED is presenting a forum on Venture Capital this Thursday, November 29 from 4:00-8:30pm. HutchLaw, a local legal firm specializing in providing service to startups and growth businesses has offered to pay the registration fee for 10 NC State MBA students to attend.

Part-time Tuition Rates at RTP and Main Campus
For the first time this coming spring semester, part-time students may take courses on both the main and RTP campuses. Although our understanding had been that students would pay tuition based on the program (either main campus or RTP) to which they were originally admitted, we have now learned that tuition will be charged by the location of each course. So, for example, if you are registered for one course on main and on course at RTP, you will have two separate charges on your bill: the main campus course charge is billed in groupings of credit hours, the RTP campus course is billed by the credit hour.
Please refer to the attached chart for tuition/fees details. We understand that this change may cause confusion for you and for your employer. The college has raised the issue of two different tuition/fee structures and the problems it causes with university officials in hopes that these differences will be resolved in the near future.
New One-Hour Courses for Part-time Students
Beginning in spring 2008, the MBA program will offer four courses for one-credit-hour on Saturdays. Here is some important information about these courses:
- They will be open to all part-time MBA students
- They do not have any prerequisites
- They will count as electives only, not toward concentration requirements
- They will be offered at the Research Triangle Park facility (Building 18 at the Park Research Center, near the intersection of Durham Freeway and Alexander Drive)
- They will be at the RTP tuition/fee rate of $551 each
- They will be graded on a pass-fail basis.
The classes will show up in TRACS in a few days, so check it often and register as you do for other courses (if you are new student this semester and need help with registration, please contact Carol Smith at carol_smith@ncsu.edu). Please keep this message because it contains the days each class will meet. Our intention will be to offer another set of one-hour courses in the fall, including some of the ones listed below along with some new offerings.
BUS 610B -- Roles Responsibilities and Practices of Chief Officers and Board Members This course would cover the job descriptions and qualifications of chief officers (CEO, CFO, Executive VP) of large and small sized companies. Similarly it will cover the duties and responsibilities of Board members. Career paths and preparation for chief officers will be covered. Chief Officers from various companies will visit. Students will prepare a Chief Officer career plan.

BUS 610C -- Business Valuation Business valuation is a critical analytic skill in many situations, e.g., IPOs, equity investment analysis, business acquisitions, corporate spin-offs, sale of private firms, estate and tax settlements. Although most managers are not responsible for formal business valuation analyses, managers often are in the position of evaluating analyses provided by valuation experts. This course is designed to provide you with foundational understanding of the primary approaches to valuation including cash flow and residual earnings modeling, and comparative analyses including value/sales, value/assets, value/earnings that provide shortcuts to estimating value. For students considering careers as financial analysts or valuation consultants, the course will provide an overview of the types of analytical skills that you will need to develop.

BUS 610D -- The Leadership Challenge In this experiential course, students will explore five practices of exemplary leadership from Kouzes’ and Posners’, The Leadership Challenge. Participants will outline specific actions that can be taken to move current projects forward by using the five practices:
1. Modeling the Way
2. Inspiring a Shared Vision
3. Challenging the Process
4. Enabling Others to Act
5. Encouraging the Heart
Kouzes’ and Posners’ research revealed two key ideas we will explore further:
- Leadership does not rest with a title or position, despite this widely-held belief. They found instead that leadership is a process or attitude; that examples of extraordinary leadership were consistently found in those with ordinary job titles.
- Their research also showed that successful leaders occur in all shapes, sizes, genders, nationalities and roles within organizations—the only requirements for success was the use of certain exemplary leadership practices

BUS 610E -- Managing the Service Lifecycle Services exchange often involves many complex combinations of data and information as providers and customers attempt to collectively coordinate and integrate their knowledge in service delivery. The key objectives of this course are to (a) develop skills and knowledge necessary to manage the services lifecycle, (b) expose students to learning and collaborating via multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) and Web 2.0 technologies (e.g., wikis, blogs), and (c) promote innovative thinking regarding how to leverage MUVEs (such as Second Life - 2L) as vehicles for new service testing and development. This course will be taught jointly by faculty from Indiana University (IU - Anne Massey) and North Carolina State University (NCSU - Mitzi Montoya and Tony O'Driscoll) and will be delivered via a MUVE (ProtoSphere) with cross-university collaborative project work in 2L. This course will culminate in an industry-sponsored case competition (with prizes) for mini-projects provided by Target Corporation, Wachovia, and IBM.

Join us for the Triangle AMA Holiday Party Social and Toy Drive! Come mingle with the local marketing community and start the holiday season off right by donating a toy to local children in need. There will be appetizers and a cash bar - so let's celebrate! The Holiday Party Social and Toy Drive takes place at Brier Creek Country Club on Wednesday, November 28th from 6:30-9:30pm.
Bring a new, unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more. Admission is free for AMA members and $10 for non-members. All toys will be donated to Toys for Tots. Registration is required.

ERM Roundtables and Events
The Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Roundtables are a series of presentations by company leaders involved in enterprise risk management. The ERM Roundtable series provides risk management professionals a forum where they can discuss and exchange ideas about effective ERM practices and techniques. Presentations are made by practitioners who share their best practices in working through the challenges of managing risk across the enterprise, as well as by faculty who present their related research.
