Information Technology Management Concentration

With computer systems becoming more complex, 24/7 Internet access becoming more essential, increasing amounts of data transfer/storage, and computer crime becoming more widespread, the demand for computer security specialists is growing. Currently, few universities focus on security-related topics, and most IT professionals learn about security on the job. Security specialist positions are less likely to be moved overseas than the other kinds of IT jobs (such as programming) because organizations still want their corporate security to be maintained in the U.S.

Professionals who understand the intricacies of managing massive amounts of data are also a growing need. The March 2004 issue of Business 2.0 suggests Database Administrator will be one of the “hot jobs” in the Research Triangle region in the upcoming years.

In NC State’s innovative approach to Information Technology Management, we offer two tracks: Data Management (data management focus) and Information and Data Assurance (security/privacy focus). We allow MBA students to take courses from the Department of Computer Science so they can have access to courses with a more demanding technical component. This also gives them more degrees of freedom in scheduling courses.
