Largest freshman class joins College of Management this fall; interest growing for international studies

Sept. 11, 2006 - The NC State College of Management this fall has its largest freshman class ever, with about 380 students, according to Erin Dixon, director of undergraduate admissions.

“We are pleased to welcome our new students and look forward to helping them explore the opportunities available for them through our undergraduate programs,” she said.

The college’s Peer Leaders are also ready to help the freshmen get acclimated to life at NC State and the College of Management. The student organization hosted a welcome picnic for the new freshmen, and is arranging other activities for the first year students.

A growing number of undergraduates are also exploring international studies through the college’s Hamilton Scholars program, said Millie Herget, director of first year student services for the college. “We also are seeing more interest among our students in semester abroad and other international opportunities,” she said.

Hamilton Scholars is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students offered jointly by the College of Management and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at NC State. Enrollment in the dual degree program has grown from a handful of students five years ago to over 80, including 31 who enrolled in the program this semester.

Each Hamilton Scholar completes the requirements for a bachelor’s degree in business management, accounting or erconomics, as well as a degree in international studies which focuses on a specific area of the world and one of its major languages. For the international component, the students choose from Africa, East Asia, South and West Asia, Europe and Latin America.
