David Washington speaks to Enloe High School students during Career-in-Business Day
Dean Washington speaks with high school students about business
April 10, 2008 – Raleigh, N.C. - David Washington, assistant dean for the NC State College of Management’s Undergraduate Programs Office, was one of the guest speakers at the second annual Career-in-Business Day hosted at Enloe High School earlier this year. He spoke on the topic: “Lessons Learned from Business.”
The Career-in-Business Day brings together professionals from diverse business backgrounds to speak on topics ranging from civics to entrepreneurship. Organized by Future Business Leaders of America, it is designed for pre-collegiate students who have demonstrated an interest in business.
“The purpose of this event is to reach out to students, to engage their interest in business. It’s important to build allegiances early and reach out to the community. Even if students aren’t interested in business at this time, it’s great to get them excited about the possibilities,” Washington said.
Natasha Ivey Deese, the FBLA advisor at Enloe High School, reiterated Washington’s comments about the Career-in-Business Day.
“Dr. Washington and other professionals were able to give advice on ethics, how to own [and operate a] business, and how to build confidence,” Ivey Deese said. “The professionals also gave advice on how to meet college criteria. This event motivates and builds the self confidence of students who attend and encourages them to pursue their dreams and goals.”
One Enloe student, Antoinyce Eaton, led a workshop entitled “Ethics, Morals and the Effect on Life and Business.” Washington said he was particularly impressed with this student’s understanding of business ethics.
“She gave a phenomenal presentation,” Washington said. “One of the most important features of the Career-in-Business Day is that it gives students exposure to professionals, and professionals a chance to speak with young students."
Washington said he aims to help widen pre-collegiate students' awareness of opportunities through similar community outreach activities.
