College of Management students offer tax return assistance for the campus, area community
Jan. 22, 2008 - NC State University students, employees, and area community residents with an annual household income of $40,000 or below can receive free assistance with their income tax returns this year, beginning Feb. 2.
The service is being provided by accounting students in NC State’s College of Management, working through the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The VITA student volunteers will be available in the college’s walk-in computer lab, located in the basement level of Nelson Hall, on a walk-in basis, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., on the following Saturdays:
- Feb. 2
- Feb. 9
- Feb. 16
- Feb. 23
“They will be working with the 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ forms, but not the 1040NR - non-resident - forms,” said Ernest Carraway, accounting lecturer and faculty coordinator for this service. Also, the only state income tax return forms that the volunteers will be completing are for North Carolina residents, he said.
Those requesting this service should bring all their 2007 income information, including:
- W-2’s and 1099’s
- Social Security cards for the primary person and any dependents being claimed on the tax return
- A picture ID for the primary tax filer
- Their 2006 tax return, if possible
The VITA program, in place for over 30 years, provides training and certification for volunteers, preparing them to complete basic income tax returns.
“We have about 15 student volunteers who have completed both the income tax class in our accounting curriculum and the VITA training,” Carraway said. “They are ready to provide this valuable service to the campus community.”
