Hamilton Scholars Program
The Hamilton Scholars Program is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students offered jointly by the College of Management and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at NC State. [Read about Alexander Hamilton.]
Hamilton Scholars are a select group of highly motivated students. To enrich their experience at NC State, they participate in activities such as special lectures, plant tours, and scholars’ banquets. Activities are designed to facilitate sharing of experiences by the Scholars. Some of the activities will be conducted in conjunction with other Scholars programs on campus, including the Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Eli Whitney and DaVinci scholars. Each of the two colleges provides a coordinator who serves as advisor to the Scholars.
Each Hamilton Scholar completes a Business Management, Accounting or Economics degree as well as an International Studies degree which focuses on a specific area of the world and one of its major languages. These areas include:
- Africa
- East Asia
- South and West Asia
- Europe
- Latin America
Elements include:
- at least three semesters of language study beyond the level required for admission to NC State,
- a field experience abroad,
- approximately 12 hours of area studies,
- participation in 6-8 activities each year
- a business policy and strategy course with a strong global orientation, and
- several other courses which focus on topics such as international relations, global affairs, and intercultural communications.
Time to Completion
Because Hamilton Scholars are completing two bachelor’s degrees at NC State, the program may require more than the traditional eight semesters of college work. The amount of extra time required ranges from one complete semester for economics to two complete semesters for accounting. Summer study may be used to shorten the process. However, the field experience may also lengthen the time to finish both degrees. It is important to keep in mind, however, that a Hamilton Scholar will leave NC State with a much higher level of preparation than a typical undergraduate.
