Field Experience
Each Hamilton Scholar arranges a significant field experience abroad. The primary purpose is immersion in the foreign language and culture of the student's focus area. Scholars are strongly encouraged to meet the field experience requirement with a job or internship abroad lasting one semester or more.
Other options include a single, lengthy study abroad experience, or two shorter summer periods of study abroad. In each case the experience should include immersion in the language and culture of the foreign geographic area of focus. The Study Abroad Office at North Carolina State and the Scholars Academic Advisor provide substantial help to students looking for opportunities for study abroad. The Study Abroad Office can also provide information about internships overseas.
As part of the field experience abroad, students should keep a journal of observations. Before leaving for the field experience, a student should consult with the director of the International Studies Program, Dr. Anne Schiller.
