Honors Program in Accounting

The Honors Program in Accounting is designed for academically talented and highly motivated students seeking a richer educational experience. Students can expand their understanding of accounting's role in society and investigate accounting problems and issues in greater depth. The instructional environment gives students opportunities to develop critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills. Students will be better prepared for entry into graduate programs and employment opportunities.

COM Honors Admission Requirements

Completion of 30 hours of coursework at NC State with at least a 3.25 overall GPA.

COM Honors Graduation Requirements

Completion of 12 credit hours of honors coursework and achievement of at least a 3.25 overall GPA and at least a 3.25 GPA in all honors courses completed.

COM Honors Coursework

12 Credit hours minimum of honors work is required. The 12 hours of honors course work must contain courses from at least two of the following categories: Special courses, advanced courses and independent study. In their senior year, all honors students must take either a regularly scheduled honors section of ACC 490 or a faculty-initiated honors option in ACC 490. ACC 490 will include a major project and/or a small group tutorial that meets the Honors Program requirement for "independent study."

The remaining 9 credit hours of honors course work must be selected from the following categories:

  • Honors sections of 300- or 400-level ACC courses.
  • Student or faculty initiated honors options in any 300- or 400-level ACC course.
    Honors credit through honors section, student initiated honors option, or faculty initiated honors option in any EC or BUS course (no more than 3 credit hours from EC or BUS courses may count towards the remaining 9 credit hours.)
  • Advanced courses: 500-level MAC courses taken as elective courses or as substitutes for 300- or 400-level courses, subject to approval by the Honors Program director.

Honors Program in Business Management

The Honors Program in Business Management is open to academically talented and highly motivated students seeking a more thorough preparation for future careers in business. Students are exposed to a richer set of business problems taught in smaller classes by distinguished faculty.

Opportunities are provided for students to develop critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. Students will be better prepared for entry into graduate programs and attractive employment possibilities.

COM Honors Graduation Requirements for Honors

Completion of 12 credit hours of honors coursework and achievement of at least a 3.25 overall GPA and at least a 3.25 GPA in all honors courses completed.

The honors BUS 480 will include a major project and/or a small group tutorial that meets the Honors Program requirement for independent study.

9 credit hours of honors course work must be selected from the following categories:

  • Honors sections of 300- or 400-level BUS courses (special courses).
  • Faculty initiated honors options in 400-level BUS concentration courses (special courses).
  • Subject to approval of the Honors Program Director, 500-level MSM (daytime) courses taken as substitutes for required courses or as electives (advanced courses).
  • Maximum of one honors section (3 credit hours) in any 300- or 400-level ACC or EC course (special course).

Honors Program in Economics

The Honors Program in Economics is designed for academically talented and motivated students who desire a richer educational experience than offered in regular courses. The primary goal of this program is to help students develop the ability to apply economic analysis to a variety of issues of involving choice at the individual, household, firm, and government level. Class size is kept small in honors sections to accommodate discussion and interaction among classmates as well as with the instructor. Students graduating with honors in economics are well prepared for graduate or professional school as well as for entering the private or public sector job market.

COM Honors Admission to Honors Courses

You may enroll in economics honors courses if you are part of the University Scholars program or if you have completed 30 hours at NC State with an overall GPA of 3.25 or better.

COM Honors Requirements

To be certified on the diploma as a graduate of the department's honors program, you must have at least a 3.25 GPA in all economics courses attempted at NC State and an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher. In addition, you must take the Honors Seminar (EC 490H) and at least two courses from the following list: EC 301H, EC 302H, a Faculty Initiated Honors Option EC Course, or a 500 level EC course.
